September 2024 – Jayden Dorant Murray
We are delighted to award Jayden Dorant Murray the Jack Petchey Award here at St Charles. Jayden is in his final year here studying Level 3 in ICT. His journey from when he first started at St Charles on a Level 1 course has been exceptional. His incredible growth in attitude, dedication and resilience to his academic and extracurricular pursuits make him very deserving of this recognition.
In his ICT sessions his teachers state that he demonstrates outstanding engagement and curiosity in the subject and his insightful questioning benefit both his deeper understanding and that of his peers. Jayden demonstrates a strong work ethic and approaches each lesson with a genuine desire to learn and improve. His attention to detail is exceptional! Whether working independently or as part of a team, he consistently demonstrates a commitment to excellence. One of Jayden’s most impressive qualities is certainly his perseverance. He is always willing to put in the time and effort necessary to succeed, even in the face of many challenges. His commitment to his academic progress is evident in his consistent performance, and his determination to overcome obstacles is truly commendable.
Whilst at sixth form Jayden also has developed a love for the technical side of theatre alongside his IT studies through the College’s enrichment programme. He has dedicated an incredible amount of his free time these past two years to attending as many educational and professional extracurricular activities as he possible can in this area to help with his dream of becoming a lighting technician which he is clearly showing an aptitude for. The Performing Arts staff at St Charles rate him highly from his involvement in a myriad of exciting activities relating to the industry. He has been involved in the prestigious LAMDA x Lyric Future Technicians Summer School, where he gained hands-on experience in lighting for film and stage, camera technique and operation, and cutting-edge virtual production techniques. He completed The National Theatre’s “Young Technicians” course where he had the opportunity to develop his technical skills, as well as discover routes into the industry and learn from top industry professionals about sound, lighting and stages. He participated in the “Take the Lead” 12-week workshop programme in association with The Old Vic and the Royal Bank of Canada to improve his interview techniques and transferrable employment skills. And if all this was not enough he participated in the Donmar Warehouse Theatre “Take the Stage” 8-week workshop and performance programme where he co-wrote and performed in a play at the Donmar and The “New Views” script writing programme with The National Theatre, where he was identified by Charlotte Peters (director of War Horse) as an exceptional writer. Wow, what a fantastic list!
In addition to all of this Jayden has helped out at college events including our Christmas production and dance shows on and off site assisting with the lighting and acting as a steward displaying his leadership skills and potential. Coupled with his kind nature, these skills and attributes which have gone from strength to strength during his time in sixth form make him a very worthy winner of this award.
Well done Jayden and we are confident that he will continue to excel in all of his future endeavours.
Jayden would like to use his award monies to subsidise an immersive theatre production (set on a spaceship!) for a group of Performing Arts x 8 students but with an emphasis on being able to observe and learn from the range of technical involvement in the show for those interested in the industry.
