During the summer holidays 2023 LS students continued to access opportunities that helped them with their future employability and Preparation for Adulthood. There was lots of activity but here are just a few examples to give a flavour of their wonderful experiences.  Well done everyone!

L3 Travel & Tourism student Ahmed, for three weeks over the summer, gave his time to volunteer with London Sports Trust.  Mr Rob Coormiah, the RBKC School Games Organiser and Sport Development Officer praised Ahmed’s contribution, and commented in particular on how he had conducted himself, his attitude and his work-ethic.

Ahmed became a valued member of the team and impressed with ‘his infectious personality that shone throughout’. In terms of helping lead activities Ahmed was able to adapt very quickly to the demands of helping to run a popular summer holiday camp. He was popular and proactive and was able to carry out a variety of tasks with minimal fuss.

The team at London Sports Trust were so impressed by Ahmed that they have started the ball rolling for him to do some more voluntary work which has led  to some paid work.

Rob and his team were really grateful to St Charles College for recommending Ahmed to work with them over the summer, and felt both he and they had benefitted greatly.

Well done, Ahmed!

Hossain Ozlat

L3 ICT student had a really successful work experience placement last year and this summer Hossain was welcomed back with open arms as a volunteer at the Equal People charity, based next to the college in St Charles Square. Hossain worked for two days a week over a month during the holidays.

His duties were varied and included greeting people at reception, supporting staff and clients with IT issues and helping the centre’s manager, Sonia, with transferring photos and documents to a shared drive.

Hossain thoroughly enjoyed his time at the centre and was able to further develop his confidence, independence and team work. In particular Hossain developed his independence by travelling independently to the organisation, helping him with his Preparation for Adulthood skills. Sonia was delighted to have Hossain help her with the administration as he has earned the trust and respect of staff and clients alike.  Well done, Hossain!

Zachary Creelman

A Level student Zachary really made the most of his summer. He completed his Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award, camping in Yorkshire over 5 days during which he also honed his orienteering skills and climbed 3 peaks!

He attended a two-day course in Graphic Design at Ravensbourne University as well as enrolling for an online ‘Introduction to Latin’ course!

Zachary visited several London art galleries and also managed a trip to Wales with family.

With his UCAS Personal Statement well under way, Zachary is looking forward to his Year 13 studies and preparing for the next steps of his education journey. Well done Zachary!

Here’s what Chona got up to:

“Having studied Art at Level 3 at St. Charles, I embraced the opportunity to attend a workshop offered by Ravensbourne University during the summer holidays. I attended a 3 day course where I chose to design a dress, focusing on a bespoke design of a butterfly. I drew the butterfly on a piece of paper which I then made adjustments accordingly, finally transferring it onto a piece of material preparing first with paper. Paper was quite easy to manipulate and replace if I wanted to make any alterations. I then used pins to secure it on the sleeve in order to create a unique piece. Once happy with my design I took photos and presented to the class about how my idea had evolved from my original design, I was very happy with my work.

This experience was really enjoyable and rewarding, giving me the opportunity to experience first hand what it would be like to attend Ravensbourne University which is considered to be one of the most prominent universities for digital media and design and vocational courses in fashion!”

Tania Begum and Soteria Tsangaris from St. Charles who accompanied Chona during the workshop stated that Chona was fully engaged in the design workshop and thoroughly enjoyed it. Tania stated she was Chona grow in confidence as her design unfolded and Soteria said that Chona felt proud to present her final piece to the group. A great experience for Chona during her summer period certainly. Well done Chona!
