Learning Support End of Year Activities
The end of the summer term saw a flurry of activities taking place for the students and staff from the College’s Learning Support Department.
On Thursday 27th June the LS Team gathered for a Review and Planning event. The purpose of the day was to produce a reflection of the Department’s strengths and areas for development which resulted in key priorities to action for the year ahead, feeding into the Department’s Self-Assessment Report. All the team members participated, both as a whole team and in sub teams working on tasks. The word “Passion” permeated the review; the passion all LS staff display to ensure each student we support gets the best deal possible in their educational and personal journey with us here at St. Charles Catholic Sixth Form College and the passion the students have for learning, succeeding and getting involved in the college community. Priorities emerging remained the Department’s commitment to reach all SEND students and further develop the students’ “Pathway to Independence” through equipping them with appropriate skills for Preparation for Adulthood and life beyond St. Charles.
The Review and Planning Day linked nicely into the Learning Support Transition event for new EHCP/SEND students for September 2023 as part of the College’s Welcome Fest on Thursday 29th June. This afternoon of fun and engaging activities provided new students with an opportunity to mix with other new students and chat with current students about the college, courses, support etc. Over 40 students were in attendance with our current students making the new students feel very welcomed indeed!
As a thank you to our current students who helped, the Department took them and others known to LS during the year on a well-deserved end of term outing on Wednesday 5th July. Following the infamous pizza lunch, 35 students accompanied by LS staff made their way to Queens Ice in Bayswater for an afternoon of bowling! This event was heavily subsidised by our very own Year 12 student Chona Brown using funds from the prestigious Jack Petchey award she received recently. What a fantastic use of the money. All involved had a great time and sadly for some it was their last St. Charles event as they leave for pastures new. There was the usual competitiveness during the afternoon of course but all in the true St. Charles’ spirit!
Here’s what some of the students said about the event.
Ahmed, L2 Travel & Tourism:
“The bowling event was great because it meant we were having a sense of togetherness. It was a great way to end the academic year, having fun and socialising with the Learning Support staff and students. It was spectacular to enjoy the end of term after all the hard work in lessons and exams which was stressful at times so this was an amazing way to end the year and celebrate! Thank you!”
Telita, L3 Art & Design:
“It was very fun and enjoyable, it was nice to get out of the college and be out with friends. I was in a small group that I knew very well and we were competitive when bowling. I was very happy that I won in my group!”
Devante, L3 Business:
“It was a fun event and to watch everyone get a strike except for me! I really enjoyed the afternoon and the pizza!”
Jayden, L2 ICT:
“It was a real fun experience. I enjoyed being with my friends, sharing smiles and laughs while competing. It shows that in addition to our studies, we can have fun times and end the year with a smile on our faces!”
Hamida, L2 Travel & Tourism:
“It was a nice end of year activity because we all got to have fun and enjoy each others’ company in a social setting to round the year off. Great atmosphere!
